Pineapple Allergy: Symptoms, Treatment, and More

Causes

However, pineapple contains food allergens that are responsible for allergies. After experiments, it is found that Bromelain causes IgE-mediated respiratory and gastrointestinal allergic reactions.

The latex present in pineapple can be another major cause of pineapple sensitivity. Latex-fruit syndrome is the presence of Latex in fruit that may be responsible for allergy. If you have allergic reactions to pineapple, you should avoid the cross-reactivity with other fruits that contains latex.

Some other fruits such as avocados, bananas, mangoes, and strawberries are associated with Latex-fruit syndrome.

Risk factors

If any of your close relatives are allergic to pineapple, you may be at increased risk of susceptibility. Your close relatives include parents, siblings, and grandparents. Feeding children related to family allergies can increase their allergy symptoms.

An increase in allergy symptoms can be quite dangerous for children. If you are allergic to pineapple, then you may also be allergic to natural rubber latex. So, when you exposure things like this, your allergy symptoms may increase.

Pineapple Allergy Treatment

If you suspect any of the above-listed symptoms after you eat pineapple, talk to your doctor. After the diagnosis tests, your doctor will prescribe over-the-counter medications. He will prescribe medicine on the base of your allergy severity to treat your allergic reactions to pineapple.

The most common and effective medications for pineapple allergy are:

  • Calamine lotion – for itchy skin and rashes
  • Topical Steroids
  • Antihistamines

For difficult breathing and asthma caused by pineapple he may prescribe:

  • Beta Agonists
  • Epinephrine – for breathing difficulty and nausea
  • Bronchodilators
  • Corticosteroid

Food to avoid

If you are allergic to pineapple, you should avoid any food made from pineapple. You should not drink pineapple juice to avoid the symptoms of this allergy. We use pineapple in many things and drinks which are as follows.

  • Banana bread
  • Soft drink
  • Fruit candies
